Review

I think this is my favorite Scott Westerfeld novel. Truly disturbing and creepy, this book presents a fairly original take on vampire mythology, presenting it as caused by parasites instead of anything more mythical and weird.

The book is particularly scary because of this scientific explanation, which makes Westerfeld’s vampires both more plausible and more brutal. The parasites in this book don’t cause bloodsucking of the “oh, it’s so naughty the way you’re biting me on the neck” fashion. “Peeps”, the name given vampires in the book, are more likely to become cannabalistic and violent. Much creepier.

I’m definitely going to read the companion novel, “Last Days”. In fact, I’m fairly sure I’ll work my way through all of Westerfeld’s books before the end of the year, although I wasn’t too impressed with the first Midnighters book. Hopefully I’ll be able to track down some of his earlier, non-YA work as well.
