Review

This book took me a hell of a long time to read - I put it down so often and picked up so many other books that I finished 10 other books while ostensibly “reading” this one. That said, it was actually a very entertaining and rewarding book when I was in the swing of reading it, especially this last week or two when I finally got close enough to the end of the book that I was able to get some momentum going. The first section of the book is perhaps the driest simply because it is over-stuffed with complex discussions on philosophy, mathematics, and all sorts of stuff that kind of went over my head. The book as a whole is fairly complex and full of circuitous political maneuvering, whether it is courtly or in the financial world of Amsterdam. It’s a fascinating book, however, and I look forward to reading the other volumes in the cycle, although I think I’ll wait a few months before I dive into the second. Hopefully the second and third volumes won’t take nearly as long to read.
