Updates for Monday the 7th

  • Have I mentioned that I love obsessively cataloging my possessions? It’s probably why I buy so many DVDs, books, etc… So I can sort them. #

  1. Have you seen Dr. Mac’s article on Delicious Library from Delicious Monster? Hold the items in front of your iSight and the program reads the bar codes. Brings up images, titles, etc. Might be helpful if you don’t have it.

  2. I hadn’t seen that article, but I’ve used Delicious Library a bit. One of the employee benefits we get is discounts and free versions of shareware software, so I was actually able to get free licenses for both Library and Booxter.

The barcode reader in Library works really well - it’s pretty cool - but there are a few things about Library that I found really annoying. It didn’t do a particularly good job of importing my previous book collections, and I want to say there were a few other annoying quirks that frustrated me enough to stop using it.

As for Booxter, I couldn’t get the barcode scanner to work, but it’s got some other cool features that I do like, such as the ability to catalog comic books. I’ve entered all of my comics, and pretty soon I’ll start going through your old boxes. It also exports iPhone-ready html versions of your library:

I haven’t found a “perfect” cataloging program yet, though. It seems like they’ve all got their annoying quirks.

  3. They also sell a portable bar code reader so you can go through your shelves, you don’t have to physically pick up your stuff. But that’s repeating work already done. Too bad it cannot import your prior databases.

The iPhone web pages are pretty cool, a little strange, but useful. I like to use iPhoto to set up web pages since it does a great job of creating the thumbnails and all the pages to support the photo album.

Will you upgrade to 3G iPhone?
