okay. within the next few weeks this website is going to die and be reborn anew. i’m probably going to start paying for webhosting (assuming i get a job and have money) and i’m going to do a from-the-ground-up re-design, simply because the current one bores me. it’s also my sincere hope that i’ll be able to scan in all of my photography work so all of you guys can see a bit of what i’ve been up to.
i also think a sampling of my writing work is in order, although considering what one of my friends is going through right now, there is some worry about copyrights and all (not that any of you guys would steal my stuff. i’m talking about those shady “other” people who might happen on my website…)
anyways, my friend barrett took playwriting with dan dietz last semester. this is the same professor i had, the same one who bitched at me when i didn’t know how to write sweeten the punch and basically failed to do the work for my independent study. anyways, when barrett was in class with dan he wrote a ten-minute play about two brothers who go to the cemetary to dig up their father because one brother is convinced he’s a saint.
apparently, barrett was talking to a friend of his recently who went and saw a series of ten-minute plays, and there was one by dan dietz, and it was about two brothers who go to the cemetary to dig up their father because one brother is convinced he’s a superhero.
needless to say, barrett was a bit peeved (furious) at this, because people paid to see this show, and it got published, and now if barrett wanted to submit his play to contests he wouldn’t be able to, and basically it looks really bad all around. i mean, i was personally surprised as hell when i heard about this, because i like dietz and wanted there to be a reasonable explanation. except i don’t know if there is one. it really does sound like dietz flat-out stole barrett’s play premise and used it as his own. and now i’ve swiftly lost respect for the guy, because i hold out little hope for other explanations. i mean, my one charitable theory was that maybe dan didn’t remember where the idea came from and thought it was his own. this seems far-fetched, but possible, i suppose…
anyways, i was going to give my new play to dan for him to read so he could see that i am in fact capable of writing something new and so that i could get his feedback… except now i’m afraid he would steal it. which is a horrible thing to think about a professor, especially one you want to like.
